By combining dispersion polymerization and γ-ray irradiation, γ-Fe,2,O,3,/polystyrene (γ-Fe,2,O,3,/PSt) magnetic composite microspheres were produced at room temperatures under ambient pressure ,via, one-step method or two-steps method. Formation mechanisms of the magnetic composite microspheres were studied. The magnetic composite microspheres were characterized and studied with transmission electron microscope (TEM), electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results show that the magnetic composite PSt microspheres containing homogeneously dispersed γ-Fe,2,O,3, nanoparticles and the acrylic acid in the system played an important role in the synthesis of the magnetic composite microspheres.
