In this paper, radiation-induced crosslinking mechanism of F-40(copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene) and characterization of the crosslinking density by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been first studied. The dose of gelation of F-40 calculated with a plot of F/C(ratio of fluorine to carbon) obtained from XPS against R(radiation dose) is 4.1 Mrad. It is found that the crosslinking density is the largest at a range of certain dose and it becomes smaller at other doses. The radiation dose to reach the maximum crosslinking density is approximately 12.1 Mrad.
