Radiation-induced crosslinking and change of thermodynamic properties in polyethylene swollen in decalin and CCl,4, at room temperature have been studied. There were marked decreases of crosslinking for the samples swollen in both solvent under irradiation in the absence of oxygen.,It is known that the first melting temperature of PE irradiated in air decreased with increasing absorbed dose and above 0.6 MGy bimodel endotherms were obtained for high density PE in DSC thermograph. It was found in this work that for the HDPE samples swollen in decalin and CCl,4, respectively after the same dose irradiation, the double peak disappeared. A possible mechanism was given.
