C 57 BL/6 mice were whole-body irradiated (WBI) with 75 mGy X-rays. The percentage of the mitotic thymocytes in the area of cortex, medulla as well as the boundary in thymus was significantly higher than that in the sham-irradiated control 3 to 7 days after irradiation. At the same time there were no significant differences in the percentage of pyknotic thymocytes in the areas mentioned above compared with the control. The present study on thymocyte morphology demonstrated further that low dose radiation may enhance the proliferative activity of thymocytes.
